1) In terms of what you wanted to be different and better, where are you now?

My situation is much better.

2) What happened during your session(s) that was (were) most helpful?

My attention was refocused towards a positive ouctome, or at least setting clear intention in acieving what I wanted to happen. Joel was great in listening to my situation, evaluating and providing useful and practical tools to work with between our meetings.

3) What would you like others to know about your work with Joel?

He has a lot of experience in this field and you can tell from the first meeting. What I liked about working with Joel is that in a soft way, he guided me through the work that needed to be done. He was right to the point and focused on helping me "help myself" through my counseling.

4) Do you have any suggestions or comments?

I enjoyed working with Joel, but sometimes felt that there was a deadline to our work together. I'm uncertain if it's the approach in therapy.

Comment:

First I appreciate the reflection on our work together. I appreciate also the opportunity to clarify the comment about a "deadline." As a brief therapist, I sincerely believe it's my job to help clients reach the point where they realize that they have the tools that will allow them to continue making progress on their own. There is no particular deadline for when this will happen - that is entirely up to the person I'm working with (of course, unless services are covered by an Employee Assistance Program including Military One Source. In that case, the deadlines are imposed by the provider and not by me). I believe it is my job to ask clients whether they have reached the point where they no longer need to meet with me. This might seem that there is some deadline, if so I'll work on making this clearer in the future. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and again, thanks for the many positive comments about our work together. Joel

2) What happened during your sessions that was (were) the most helpful?

We were able as a family to have Joel's ear as an outside observer. He could extract the most important take-aways from all that we were working on together and put them into concrete terms. It helped bring clarity and structure to all the things we were trying to do. Having appointments with Joel also helped us to be accountable for the work. Therapy is work. We have to consciously make changes to see the improvements... Joel helped us to stay accountable.

3) What would you like others to know about your work with Joel?

Joel is very relatable, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. He found points of connection with us as a family and as an individual. My 10-year-old son loved talking with Joel and that made things easy and fun.

4) Do you have any suggestions or other comments?

Thank you for the work you do! We will miss you.

2) What happened during your sessions that was (were) the most helpful?

The effective questioning - when you asked for clarification on something or a follow-up to a comment I made, often it forced me to dig deeper and be more honest rather than give a surface-level reply. You asked relevant questions and I knew you were listening intently and truly processing what I was telling you. That wasn't my experience with others. Beyond that, the suggestions at the end of sessions. Having a plan of action to take steps forward created hope. Instead of walking out of the office with feelings of unresolved issues, it felt like there was a plan in place to move forward - I just needed to execute.
3) What would you like others to know about your work with Joel?
When I came to see Joel I was in a bad place - personally and professionally. I was dealing with unresolved grief and that was impacting my habits and behaviors. After a few short sessions with Joel I started the road back to being the person who I believe myself to be. It has been about 6 months since my first session with Joel - I am now working a good job, I have returned to a hobby that I love and I just completed my first semester of a degree program towards a more rewarding profession (and earned a 4.0 GPA!). Joel helped me realize that I had the ability to determine my own course in life and helped me develop positive habits to achieve my goals.
4) Do you have any suggestions or other comments?
Thank you for all that you have done for me!

In terms of your best hopes for therapy, where are you now (*Things are worse, *No difference, *Slight improvement, *Much better, *My best hopes are reached)?
"Better"
What happened during your sessions that was (were) most helpful?
Joel did a great job with asking questions that made me clarify my vision further. He also seemed to clearly see who and where I was.
What would you like others to know about your work with Joel?
Joel is a warm and easy person to speak with. He makes one feel comfortable and allows his client a chance to breathe.
Do you have any other comments or suggestions?
I was encouraged and inspired by my work with Joel. They say the answers to any problems are already inside us; and Joel did a great job helping me to reveal those answers.

"What seemed like a complex, overwhelming situation became much simpler once I had stated my "best hopes" to Joel and explored the important things for me to notice on my way there. As Joel says, the transformation happens between sessions, and although I wasn't sure if anything had happened by the end of our meetings... I found that it was surprisingly effortless afterward to make choices that brought me to a place of clarity and strength. It only took two sessions for me to move through some grieving and feel confident on my own two feet, which surprised me given all that I was dealing with. I gained confidence in my ability to cope, and my coping skills immediately improved exponentially even though 'the situation' didn't disappear overnight."

"I was encouraged to think for myself and utilize the resources that were within my reach to find help and answers to very difficult emotional circumstances.   Joel has been instrumental in allowing me to see for myself that brief therapy is excellent and an incredible tool to use throughout my life, not only during crisis.  When I think of Joel and his approach, a wise proverb comes to mind.  "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he (or she in this case) eats for a lifetime." I never thought I could apply that to the emotional and mental health field, but I truly believe this is what Joel has shown me.  Thank you, Joel, for giving undivided attention, asking the right questions and remaining objective.  Excellent therapy, I highly recommend it!"

"Learning to think before any action takes place. Before responding I now think more about the situation that is at hand, then respond. Joel was easy to talk to. I felt comfortable with him, so it made it easier for me to say what I needed to say. He brought things out of me by asking questions I might have forgotten about. I learned to think first; once you do that, things seem to unravel a different way. If for any reason I need to talk again, I will call Joel. Thank-you for your help. My life has changed for the better"

"Joel helped teach me how to deal with my problems without his help. His exercises were extremely helpful and things I would not think to do on my own. I realized that the way I was going to get the most out of therapy was to follow his instruction and face my problems. It is important to make sure you do your home work outside of therapy if you truly want to get better. Joel thinks outside the box. I honestly can tell you that the assignment he would give me after therapy worked like magic. I left every session feeling better and full of hope. In order for you to get the most out of therapy you must be honest with him and yourself. I owe a lot to Joel. He helped me through the most difficult time in my life and I am better today for having met him."

My best hopes are reached
What happened during your sessions that was (were) most helpful?
I think my thinking and tactics for dealing with my particular situation were "refocused" in a positive way. This new way in seeing things (although, I must admit, came about without me putting much thought into it/realizing it) has put me on a right, more focused path.

He challenges you to overcome your obstacles through his suggestions and if one is motivated to follow through with them they pay off in the end".
